Hundreds of thousands of Americans are injured each year in auto accidents. Furthermore, auto accidents are one of the top killers of Americans, as it's estimated that some 40,000 perish each year from injuries sustained in car crashes.Technology has unquestionably improved in automotive design and engineering, bringing better features into today's cars which thereby make them safer. But no vehicle is 100 percent safe and the day that occurs - though not from lack of effort on behalf of automakers - is still more of a pipe dream than reality.

However, that's not to say that certain cars haven't played a role in saving their drivers or passengers' lives - at least according to those that were in it at the time of their close call. That's the premise behind the Volvo Saved My Life Club. Specifically, it's made up of owners who truly, whole heartedly believe that their Volvo automobile really spared them from an otherwise certain death.

Here's a sample of some of the members that make up the Volvo Saved My Life Club:

  • The Bowles Family (Broken Arrow, OK): The Bowles family was on the way to a local rec center in their 2000 Cross Country, driving in the left hand lane. Just a few blocks from the rec center, they were rear-ended. The seat belts caught Joey and Gentry Browles in the front seat and the couple's two infant sons were properly restrained in their child seats in the back seat of the Cross Country, preventing injury among all occupants. But the initial collision wasn't the only threat they had to worry about - the impact from the initial crash was pushing the Cross Country into the intersection of oncoming traffic. Thankfully, Joey Browles was able to control the vehicle before that came to fruition. The Bowles family was lucky. But there was more than just luck that had to do with them leaving the accident unscathed. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they told them that their Cross Country was the safest vehicle of its type on the market at the time. It was totaled from the damage it sustained in the accident, but if not for their Volvo, the Bowles family could have lost something much more precious than just a car.
  • Connie Scanlon (Grayslake, IL): "You cannot beat a Volvo in an accident." That's what was told to Connie Scanlon after her Volvo Station wagon was involved in an accident while she was in an ambulance and on her way to the hospital to be treated for injuries following it. Her vehicle - totaled. Her windows - blown out. But she herself only suffered minor injuries following a multi-car crash around Thanksgiving years ago. Scanlon learned first-hand that had it not been a Volvo car she was behind the wheel of, things could have been a whole lot worse.

Those are just two of the Volvo Saved My Life club members' stories. There are many more club members. While it might seem odd to have a club dedicated to survivors of serious auto accidents, think of it this way - it certainly beats the alternative. That's part of the value of Volvo cars - they're known for their safety.

Unquestionably, the entire industry is anticipating the day when potentially fatal car crashes become a thing of the past. But until then, drivers can rest assured they'll be as safe as possible behind the wheel of their Volvo.
