EV Vs. Recharge Plug-In Hybrid Vs. Mild Hybrid: What You Need To Know

EV vs. Recharge Plug-In Hybrid vs. Mild Hybrid

If your plans to invest in a new car have you interested in electrification, check out our EV vs. Recharge plug-in hybrid vs. mild hybrid guide. While electrified vehicles have been on the streets for a while now, they haven't always been practical alternatives to cars that use traditional fuel. However, the infrastructure to support EVs has grown immensely, and advances in automotive technology have also extended these vehicles' capability and range. More people than ever are flocking to the Earth-friendly electric revolution.

Drivers also now have a wider spread of options than ever before. Those who love Volvo vehicles, for example, have over a dozen options to choose from, and all of them are intriguing. Let's look at some of these cars now, or you can talk to our team directly at O'Steen Volvo Cars of Jacksonville.

Volvo Mild-Hybrid Vehicles

Volvo Mild-Hybrid Vehicles

The majority of new Volvo cars are mild hybrids. From a user experience perspective, they're very similar to gasoline-only cars. However, they incorporate regenerative braking technology.

When you choose to utilize this driving mode, you bring your vehicle to a stop by releasing pressure on the gas pedal. Your car's included motor starts running in reverse, acting as a power generator. This kinetic energy gets turned into stored energy within a battery. When you get moving again, it can then be used to boost your vehicle's overall fuel efficiency.

Unlike the plug-in hybrid and EV models that we'll discuss later on in this page, a Volvo mild-hybrid car or SUV doesn't need to be plugged in.

As of the current model year, Volvo Cars offers the following vehicles with mild-hybrid architecture:

  • Volvo V60 Cross Country: wagon
  • Volvo V90 Cross Country: wagon
  • Volvo S60: sedan
  • Volvo S90: sedan
  • Volvo XC40: compact SUV
  • Volvo XC60: midsize SUV
  • Volvo XC90: three-row SUV

These vehicles rely on either a 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 295-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged option.

Volvo Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles

While every bit of gas savings helps, mild-hybrid vehicles don't pack quite the same punch as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. PHEVs utilize more impressive battery-and-motor systems, which results in markedly higher fuel efficiency. For example, the Volvo S60 Recharge, the plug-in hybrid version of the sedan mentioned earlier, can make up to an EPA-estimated 74 MPGe (Combined).1

As compelling as that number is, some drivers are more intrigued by what PHEVs can do without using any gasoline. Pure Mode refers to a Volvo plug-in hybrid's all-electric range. In the case of the 2024 Volvo S60 Recharge, it can travel 41 miles under this setting,1 which is longer than many people's daily commute. The Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid can go up to 32 miles.1

As the name implies, these hybrids will need to be plugged in to gain enough power for Pure Mode. However, because they can run solely on gasoline, too, you don't have to worry about charging your SUV up mid-trip when going cross-country for the holidays.

Volvo PHEV models include:

  • Volvo V60 Recharge: wagon
  • Volvo S60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid: sedan
  • Volvo S90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid: sedan
  • Volvo XC60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid: midsize SUV
  • Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid: three-row SUV

They all rely on the T8 AWD powertrain, which generates 455 horsepower. This system can be charged more slowly by using a Level 1 charging capable, which can be plugged into a regular outlet, or more quickly by utilizing a Level 2 wallbox.

Volvo Electric Vehicles

Volvo Electric Vehicles

Never want to rely on the gas pump again? Volvo Cars has been increasing its selection of all-electric vehicles with the goal of embracing full electrification by 2030. Beyond freeing yourself from the highs and lows of yo-yoing gas prices, driving an all-electric vehicle can reduce your maintenance obligations. Without combustion engines, these SUVs don't require oil changes.

Our team will be happy to show you the following Volvo EVs, which, like our plug-in hybrids, often carry the Recharge name:

  • Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric: compact SUV
  • Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric: compact SUV
  • Volvo EX30: smallest Volvo SUV
  • Volvo EX90: three-row SUV

Please keep in mind that both the Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90 are currently only available to reserve, as they are 2025 models due to arrive at dealerships in the latter half of 2024. Of the two currently available SUVs, the Volvo C40 Recharge can travel up to an EPA-estimated 297 miles1 when its standard Single Motor Extended Range powertrain is fully charged. However, you also have the option of a more powerful Twin Motor powertrain with AWD that can help you get from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds with up to 402 horsepower.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge has a slightly shorter range of 293 miles with its standard powertrain and RWD1 but offers owners more cargo space. Like the other EVs listed, this SUV can refill its battery using Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 DC fast charging.
